Webmaster Tools Shows Nofollow Links

April 3rd, 2007 by Eric Enge

Google Webmaster Tools recently added the neat capability of seeing a good solid list of inbound links to your site, and allowing you to download the entire list in a spreadsheet file. However, we recently noticed that these links include links from Yahoo! Answers.

So here’s the kicker. These links are NoFollowed. So Google is showing NoFollowed links in Webmaster Tools. So is Google providing link credit for these links? I doubt it. But it’s really interesting that they are showing them at all.

    Eric:

Matt Cutt’s post about Webmaster Tool showing all known inbound link made it VERY clear that not all of the links shown have value. He actually said,

Do not assume just because you see a backlink that it’s carrying weight. I’m going to say that again: Do not assume just because you see a backlink that it’s carrying weight. Sometime in the next year, someone will say “But I saw an insert-link-fad-here backlink show up in Google’s backlink tool, so it must count. Right?” And then I’ll point them back here, where I say do not assume just because you see a backlink that it’s carrying weight.

There is an excellent greasemonkey script from Joost de Valk that colours the not found red, strike-throughs the “no follows” and displays the PR in webmaster tools:

Liam, I tried this script but it did not work.
The problem with backlinks is not only follow or nofollow, there is another problem which is more than 700 oubound links.
The best free tool that can help you is: backlinkwatch.com will give you nofollow and the number of oubound links. But it takes time to give you results.
