Shashi Seth Discusses the Future of Search

Today I have the privilege of posting an interview with Shashi Seth, the Senior VP of Search Products for Yahoo! It was a fun interview for me, because the very first interview I ever did was with Shashi back on October 24, 2006. He was at Google at the time, and they had just launched their Custom Search Engines product line. The key point that emerges from the interview is that Yahoo! views itself as continuing to invest heavily in search. They view the 10 blue links part of search as a commodity, ... Read More >

Latest Interview: Yahoo’s Dennis Mortensen – Comment Here

The interview for this week is with Yahoo!'s Dennis Mortensen. Now that IndexTools has been part of Yahoo! for more than a year, and the product is now called Yahoo! Web Analytics, I thought it would be great to catch up with Dennis again. One of the very cool things that now makes up the current product is integrated demographic data. Yahoo! Web Analytics now integrates data from the rest of the Yahoo! network of web sites, so site owners can get a view into the age, gender, types of interests, and ... Read More >

Last week at SES San Jose we held an event we dubbed the Search Engine Foosball Smackdown. This was a heated event between foosers from Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo!. Each search engine sent some of its best foosers to see who would be the dominant search engine in the market (well the foosball market at least). It is easy to see why, as the winner got the chance to take home the coveted Stonetemple Cup. Here is John Biundo of STC holding that rare beauty: The elimination ... Read More >

Yahoo! Search Builder and Getting More Pages Indexed by Yahoo!

A while back I wrote about how building a search engine using Yahoo! Search Builder can increase the number of pages you have in the Yahoo! index. This notion did not come from me. It came from an interview I did with Tim Mayer back in December 2006. Recently, we began a little experiment with this notion to see if we could see any impact from doing this. It's still too early to have data from this test, but we have already noticed one very interesting thing. Take a look at this image: Notice ... Read More >

Is Yahoo! Becoming a Google Clone?

Brett Tabke recently opened up a forum thread on WebmasterWorld titled: Yahoo SERPS vs Google SERPS - If you can't beat em - join em?. Brett also provides a screen shot comparing the results screens of the two engines. It's also interesting to consider the changes made in Panama. I was staring at Yahoo! Search Marketing's new spreadsheet template and it struck me how similar it has come to the Google AdWords spreadsheet format. For that matter Yahoo is using a very similar algorithm for ranking ads, ... Read More >

Increase the number of pages Yahoo indexes on your site

Recently we had the chance to speak with Tim Mayer about Yahoo's Search Builder product. Search Builder is the vertical search engine offering from Yahoo, that competes with products such as Google Custom Search Engines, Live Search Macros, and Eurekster. In the discussion, Tim reveals that sites that use Search Builder on their site may well increase the number of pages on their site that get indexed by Yahoo. It amazes me that there has not been more play regarding this point. It seems to me that I ... Read More >
