Latest Interview: Alex Chudnovsky

I recently did an interview with Alex Chudnovsky of Majestic SEO. After my recent interview with Rand Fishkin about Linkscape Alex contacted me to discuss his backlinking tool. Majestic SEO offers a competing tool to Linkscape, and therefore it made for an interesting discussion. It looks like this market is heating up!

Very informative article. But I still don’t get it– why would websites allow Majestic’s crawler to eat their bandwidth when all Majestic can offer is paid services to those who want to find backlinks information about websites? It’s like if I own a website with 2 million unique pages why would I let Majestic’s crawler eat my bandwidth and consume database/machine processing resources?

  2. Hi Cheryl,

It’s a fair question. Lots of people implement crawlers that come to web sites, and the vast majority of web sites let them do that. Another example is with Archive.org that keeps (potentially) complete copies of your web site in an archive so people can review how the site changed over time.

In the case of a tool like Majestic, even if you could prevent crawling of your site this would only stop it from seeing the links you implement to other sites. It would still be able to report to others all the sites that link to you.

  3. Hi Cheryl,

We offer free service to webmasters who verify their websites, the only thing we ask in exchange is ability to crawl the site.

It may seem wise to disallow our bot crawling your sites to prevent competitors from gaining the edge – this is a wrong assumption because your competitors will care most about external backlinks pointing to your site, most likely from sites that have nothing to do with you.

Also I think it’s worth saying that our project actually works on trying to create worthy competitor to Google and it is for this reason that we created webgraph index – it helps us understand relevancy and also it helps us finance further research.

Just want to add here thanks to Eric for taking time to talk to me about it. :)
